It’s hard to believe that only 30 years ago there wasn’t even a road and the bulk of the island consisted of dense Jungle in between it’s idyllic beaches. Travelers would spend days on end getting from one part of the island to the next. Since then a rapid development in tourism has seen an influx of luxury five star resorts, shopping mall’s, cocktail bars and restaurants serving only the finest cuisines. This once backpackers haven may have managed to retain a small amount of it’s original identity, but the majority of the island has transformed into an international holiday attraction for all that visit.

Just a short boat ride away and part of the Archipelago lies the bohemian island of Koh Phangan. Famed for it’s full moon parties, beautiful beaches and backpacker culture Phangan has not seen the same kind development of it’s nearby neighbour. Attracting a younger and less family orientated crowd the island remains very popular with backpackers on extended holidays or gap years from their educational commitments.
